Hi Caitlin!
This is a comment about Girls, Drums, and Dangerous Pie (aka, the best book I read this week). Do you remember the beginning of the book, where he's sitting at his graduation? So basically the whole book is a flashback. So at the end of the book, we are really back at the beginning where he's sitting at his graduation but, a few things are different: Annette is now his girlfriend, Renee is now his friend, and Jeffy has some hair leading the reader to assume that he is somewhat better than he had been (could even be in remission?). The part THAT MADE ME CRY SITTING AT MY DESK IN THE LIBRARY was the part where Jeffy says, "Steven, I love you." (tearing up as I type) and the book ends with Steven saying "Jeffy, I..."

*sigh* What is the reader to think of this? I am lead to believe that Steven has learned throughout the ordeal of Jeffy's sickness about a greater kind of love (remember the character Sam?). He has changed a little bit from the funny-all-the-time character to a character who can actually say to his little brother without cracking a joke "Jeffy, I LOVE YOU." But perhaps this phrase is one he'd like to keep private (much like his journal entries) and away from the prying eyes of the reader. And so, the author does not write the entire comment out, and simply leaves us with "Jeffy, I..." which is so anti-climactic and yet leaves you thinking.

That's my best analysis. Hope it helps!
